Stage Managers in Training (SMIT)
Students accepted into the program will be designated as Stage Managers in Training (SMITs) and assigned to a specific production. Throughout the semester, they will work alongside directors, performers, production staff, and the Lead Stage Management while developing the skills necessary to manage rehearsals and performances independently. Each SMIT will receive hands-on training, regular evaluations, and individualized mentorship designed to prepare them for future leadership opportunities within Center Stage.

SMIT Bootcamp

August 18th from 7:00pm-9:00pm

SMIT Boot Camp is where our Stage Managers in Training begin their journey. During these sessions, students will receive their first introduction to stage management at Center Stage and begin developing the skills they will use throughout the semester.

Students will learn the fundamentals of organization, communication, leadership, rehearsal procedures, blocking notation, cue calling, and production management, giving them the tools they need for a successful semester.

Leadership Program Fee – $150

Students accepted into the Stage Management Program will be charged a $150 leadership program fee that covers Stage Management Boot Camp, training materials, weekly mentorship, and continued support throughout the production process.

This program is designed to provide students with hands-on leadership and technical theatre training while giving them the opportunity to apply those skills in a real production environment. Students are not paying to volunteer; they are investing in specialized training, individualized instruction, and valuable real-world experience.

In the interest of transparency, 100% of this fee is used to support the compensation of our Lead Stage Manager, who oversees training, provides weekly mentorship, and guides students throughout the semester.
 

Show Weekend Commitment

Because stage management extends far beyond rehearsals, all Stage Managers in Training must commit to participating in the entire production weekend for the cast to which they are assigned. Students should expect to assist with a variety of responsibilities, including: Supporting performers backstage, Managing scene changes, Assisting with costumes and quick changes, Tracking props and microphones, Calling places, Maintaining communication between production teams, Assisting directors and technical staff. Organizing backstage spaces, Supporting load-in, dress rehearsals, performances, and strike.

Assignments may vary depending upon the needs of each production, but every SMIT is expected to contribute to the success of the entire production team.

Students assigned to a Kids production will attend the entire Kids show weekend, while students assigned to a Junior production will attend the entire Junior show weekend.

Advancement Opportunities

Graduation from the Stage Management Program does not mark the end of a student's journey, it marks the beginning of it. Students who successfully complete the program and demonstrate leadership, professionalism, reliability, and strong communication skills may be invited to join the Center Stage production staff as stage managers for future productions. This opportunity is reserved for students who consistently demonstrate the ability to lead others, remain calm under pressure, solve problems quickly, and uphold the standards and values of Center Stage Youth  Theatre.
